Needs maturation
My wife and I played June 16, 2024. I first played the course in the 1980s and 1990s - it was a favorite from day one, with a fine design and exceptional setting. I was happy to hear it had reopened after years of dormancy, but disappointed by the condition, especially the front nine. I play all my shots "down", and the sparse turf in the fairways meant I hit frequently from dirt, mud or sand. The bunkers were more gravel than sand, and slopes surrounding bunkers consisted of patchy growth as well. The bunkers hadn't been raked recently, either. Greens were an improvement over other areas, but very slow. In my opinion, the front nine should not be open until it fills in. The back nine was in better shape, but it too had some spotty growth in places where one should be rewarded for hitting one's ball. I hope it receives the attention it deserves going forward, as it's a fine layout in a gorgeous setting, and Southern Colorado could use more golf options. Current pricing is advertised as discounted due to conditions, indicating it will be higher as it fills in. I'll check it out again in a year or two, but if the prices go significantly higher, I'll go to Breckenridge, which is a bit closer.
